Abstract: New applications of the nonlinear total internal reflection in the Q switching of a ruby laser are reported. A continuous transition is possible from the mode-locked case to the generation of smooth giant pulses: This can be achieved by varying the angle of incidence of radiation on an interface between a solution of a phototropic dye and glass.
