Abstract:
Classical equations for three interacting waves are used in a description of inverse Raman scattering (IRS), which is the interaction of two (monochromatic and wide-band) pump waves with vibrational transitions in matter. The conditions for the observation of IRS are described, and its advantages and disadvantages compared with the normal Raman scattering are considered. Special features of the various types of spectroscopic information (determination of the intensity, frequency, line profile, and degree of depolarization, and detection of small amounts of matter) obtained with the aid of IRS are discussed. It is pointed out that the highest detection sensitivity (10–2–10–3 mole/liter) is obtained for internal IRS in a dye laser.
