Abstract: A new interpretation is proposed of the reported anomaly of the intensity of the 2p6 1S0–2p5nd3P01 transition in the spectrum of Al IV, excited in a laser jet. It is shown that the anomaly is not due to a population inversion, as suggested earlier, but due to the passage of continuous radiation from the dense and hot core of the jet plasma through the rarefied and cold outer zone of the jet.
