Nonlinear refraction of low-power small-cross-section beams

Abstract:
An experimental investigation was made of thermal nonlinear effects in a focused beam of a low-power (milliwatt) gas laser. A "banana" self-focusing pattern and "flattening" of beams were observed. An explanation of this effect is provided and some applications are indicated.
