Abstract:
Theoretical and experimental studies were made of the possibility of formation in laser amplifiers of a nearrectangular spatial beam profile by the use of a hard aperture and a spatial filter with a wide pass band located behind it. Experiments on amplification of 1 nsec pulses were carried out in a four-stage laser amplifier with an active element made of phosphate neodymium glass and with an exit aperture 45 mm in diameter. This method of shaping the spatial beam profile ensured attainment of the maximum brightness of the output beam, which was close to the brightness achieved when a spatial profile was formed by a soft aperture.
