Abstract:
It is shown that when the third harmonic is generated in mixtures of gases a buffer gas not only affects the phase-matching condition but also alters the polarization of the medium. Depending on the ratios of the pressures of the main and buffer gases and of their nonlinear susceptibilities, the third harmonic power may rise or decrease strongly compared with the same process in the pure main gas. A report is given of an experimental study of the generation of the third harmonic of the $L_\alpha$ hydrogen line in krypton-xenon and krypton-argon mixtures.
