Abstract: Kinetic equations of vibrational relaxation in polyatomic gases are used in a quantitative description of the kinetic cooling in carbon dioxide. At T = 300 °K the relaxation of the vibrational energy of an antisymmetric mode is accompanied by an exchange of one quantum into three quanta of a combined deformation and symmetric mode.
