Abstract:
We shall describe briefly a development of mathematics in two parts (of Russia and of Austria-Hungary) of Poland at the turn of the century XIX-XX. A choice of new directions of mathematics in Poland before (1915-1918) and after (1918-1926) independence restoration until May 1926 coup. The progress in mathematics in the time of Piłsudski (1926-1935). The progress in mathematics in 1936-1939. Simultaneously to historical picture new mathematical schools will be describe: in set-theoretic topology, in mathematical logic, in functional analysis and theory of approximation, in probability theory and mathematical statistics, with biographies of eminent scientists of this schools (H. Steinhaus, K.Kuratowski, B.Knaster,;Lukasiewicz, A. Tarski, S.Banach, J. Schauder, S. Mazur, S.Kaczmarz, A. Zygmund, A. Lomnicki, M. Kac, J. Splawa- Neyman). Besides literature the lecturer uses private sources to wit talks with academicians K.Kuratowski, A. Pelchynski, Ch. Bessaga in 1979-1980, and sources from conferences on historia of mathematics in Poland author took part in 1990-th and 2000-th.
