Abstract:
Biomechanics is the application of mechanics to understand better the structure, properties, and function of biological systems. The human eye is a remarkably complex structure with biomechanics involved in many of its functions. Solid mechanics-based models have been used in recent years as tools to describe, for example, the stress-strain state of the eye shell under the encircling band; to build a biomechanical model of the choroidal detachment, to depict the different mechanical aspects of the development of glaucomatous atrophy of the optic nerve fibres and the behaviour of Lamina Cribrosa - a circular or closed to a circular plate, where the optic nerve fibres pass. The talk will review some of these models, with a focus on the mathematical models for various types of tonometers and differences in the intraocular pressure readings (IOPR) before and after vision correction surgeries.
