Abstract: We will use simple examples to understand what the discrete Painleve equations are and how the Sakai classification of these equations works. We will find out how the surface of the initial conditions of these equations looks like and which groups describe the symmetries of such surfaces. We will also see how beautiful and complex algebro-geometric constructions arise in simple discrete systems.
