Joint Universality as Tool for Distinguishing $L$-Functions

After a short historical introduction, highlighting in particular the path-breaking work of Sergey Mihailovich Voronin on universality phenomena for zeta- and $L$-functions, we present a few old and one new application for distinguishing L-functions.
