Abstract:
We argue that the entanglement between regions of target space of a large N field theory
with a smooth holographic dual provides a precise meaning to entanglement of a region in the
bulk. We conjecture that the leading answer for this quantity is A/4G, where A is the area of
the entangling surface and G is Newton’s constant. For specially chosen regions in Dp brane
backgrounds, we provide a precise map to the target space of the dual theory. Our conjecture
then leads to the conclusion that this target space entanglement entropy should scale like O(N2)
which is quite plausible in a system with O(N2) degrees of freedom. Recent numerical advances
in studying the D0 brane system hold out hope that this proposal can be tested in a precise
way in the future. (Based on Sumit R. Das, Anurag Kaushal, Gautam Mandal and Sandip
