Abstract: We argue that the entanglement between regions of target space of a large N field theory with a smooth holographic dual provides a precise meaning to entanglement of a region in the bulk. We conjecture that the leading answer for this quantity is A/4G, where A is the area of the entangling surface and G is Newton’s constant. For specially chosen regions in Dp brane backgrounds, we provide a precise map to the target space of the dual theory. Our conjecture then leads to the conclusion that this target space entanglement entropy should scale like $O(N^2)$ which is quite plausible in a system with $O(N^2)$ degrees of freedom. Recent numerical advances in studying the D0 brane system hold out hope that this proposal can be tested in a precise way in the future. (Based on Sumit R.
