Abstract: Ivan Vsevolodovich Meshchersky (1859–1935) graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Department of St. Petersburg University in 1882. He became a major specialist in the field of applied and theoretical mechanics, as well as a wonderful teacher. In 1914, he compiled a "Collection of problems in theoretical mechanics." In the preface to the first edition (515 tasks), I.V. Meshchersky writes that teachers of the Polytechnic Institute L.V. Assur, B.A. Bakhmetev, I.I. Bentkovsky and others also took part in the compilation of the book. In the modern edition of 2019, there are about 1700 tasks. During many years, the authors' team, including N.V. Butenin, A.I. Lurie, D.R. Merkin, from various higher educational institutions of Leningrad, worked on various editions of the "Collection". Now this book is part of the "golden fund" of world classical education literature. The report will present the stages of the formation of the "Collection".
