The effect of errors in the reference lists in the Web of Science database on the citation and impact factor of scientific journals

Abstract:
Errors made in the article reference lists lead to an incorrect and decreased Times Cited values in
Web of Science, and consequently to incorrect total number of citations of the author, decreased author’s
h-index, journal’s Impact Factor and other bibliometric indicators. Incorrect bibliometric indicators affect
negatively on administrative decisions including in the field of financial support of scientific investigation,
as well as distort bibliometric rankings of journals, authors and scientific organizations. We describe how
to find and correct errors in the reference lists and thus to improve journal Impact Factor.
