March 28, 2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Grothendieck (1928-2014), one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century. We will give an overview of the four-volume biography of Grothendieck, written by Winfried B. Sharlau, focusing on the theme "Grothendieck and Russia." Let us give two well-known examples of Grothendieck's contacts with Russian mathematicians.
In its main part, the report is devoted to the new facts of the biography of Grothendieck's father (Alexander P. Shapiro), whose real name was Iosif Isaevich Shapiro. The facts were opened in 2018.
We shall tell about the Grothendieck's brother, whom he could not find after World War II. His name was David Alexandrovich Shapiro (1918-1997), he was a Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences. The centenary of his birth was celebrated on November 4, 2018. Copies of archival materials received in autumn 2018 will also be shown.
