On the function $P(x)$

In the talk, we present some recent results concerning the properties of the function $P(x)$, that is, the remainder term in the circle problem. We also formulate some new hypothesis about the behavior of $P(x)$ on the short segments (whose length has order $\asymp \sqrt{x}$). The present attention to such problems is connected with quantum chaos theory and the universality hypothesis.
