Abstract: A numerical model is developed, and interaction between a turbulent mixing zone and a local perturbation of the density field in a pycnocline is studied. It is demonstrated that the flow induced by a local perturbation of the density field can generate turbulence energy in the turbulent mixing zone and increase its lifetime.
