The Basic Research Institute in the Mathematical Sciences (BRIMS) was set up by Hewlett-Packard in 1994 as part of an initiative to widen the Company's research base. BRIMS is located in Bristol, England and is attached to Hewlett-Packard Laboratories Bristol, the European arm of the Company's corporate research structure. BRIMS is an experiment in fostering basic research in an industrial setting. It is founded on the belief that science and engineering should stimulate and influence each other. All scientific work undertaken at BRIMS is in the public domain.
