CMAF (Centro de Matemática e Aplicacões Fundamentais) is a research unit at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa. It had its beginning in 1975. The Center, devoted to research in several fields of Pure and Applied Mathematics, is hosted at Complexo Interdisciplinar da Universidade de Lisboa.
It is financially supported by FCT – Fundacão para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, the fund management being carried out by Fundacão da Universidade de Lisboa.
The research team of CMAF, as submitted to assessment and funding by FCT for the period 2007-2010, consists of 39 (fully integrated) Ph D members, together with 26 "Other Researchers (PhD)" and 14 graduate students. The members of the Center must comply to a set of internal rules related with scientific productivity.
The current team has been structured into 8 groups corresponding to different areas of research. One of them (Mathematical Biology) is entirely new and gathers people with experience in research across disciplines. Another new group (Nonlinear Analysis and Free Boundary Problems) sets back in CMAF a field which has already been one of its domains of expertise some years ago.
