Department of Mathematical Sciences, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Republic of Korea (South)Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology or KAIST is an institute of higher learning in Daedeok Science Town, Daejeon, South Korea. KAIST is located in Daedock Research Park in the academia cluster.

Established in 1981 through the amalgamation of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS) with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) by the KAIST Law (Law No. 3778; new foundation of the university for the establishment of the bachelor's program), it has currently 7,000 students and 800 teaching staff.

KAIST is regarded as the Korean MIT, it is the only university in Korea that is controlled by the Ministry of Science and Technology instead of the Ministry of Education. The Institute's purpose is to provide highly qualified scientists and engineers, to perform mid- to long-term basic and applied research, and to provide a research platform for other institutions. It is generally regarded among Koreans as the most prestigious science and technology institute in the country. Its graduates have played a major role in making the nation into a net exporter of high-technology goods over the past few decades. It routinely recruits gifted sophomores from South Korean science high schools.

Students graduated from KAIST are well-appreciated, nationally as well as internationally, by a wide range of professional communities, and are highly successful in their professional lives, thanks to the excellence of education, innovative and creative, in an international environment.

The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.
