Smirnov Scientific Research Institute in Mathematics and Mechanics was founded 3 May 1932 according to the decree of the Counsil of the Folk Comissars. A. R. Kulisher became the institutes first director. The institute consisted of two departments: the Mathematidal Department with V. I. Smirnov as a leader, and the Mechanical Department leaded by E. L. Nikolai. In 1989 the institute was called after the academician V. I. Smirnov.

Nowadays the SRIMM is a part of the Scientific-Educational Center in mathematics, mechanics, IT and astronomy. It is an organizing and financial base on which the institutes laboratories and the chairs of the Mathematical-Mechanical Faculty can lead their researches in the field of mathematics, mechanics and IT.

The main part of fundamental researches is being realized by the 17 laboratories. Each of them represent unique creative collectives with rich traditions. More then 200 collaborates were taking part in the researches, among them 30 Sc.Doctors and 73 Ph.Doctors. The number of persons employed by the Institute on permanent contract is 98, among them Academy member, Prof. N. F. Morozov, two correspondent members V. A. Jacubovitsh and V. A. Pliss, 18 Sc.Doctors and 49 Ph.Doctors.

During the last five years the scientists of SRIMM have published 53 monographs, 16 of them have been published abroad. Besides there have come out 20 collections of scientific articles. A number of the employees have got national rewards for their scientific activity. The institute hosts annual international and Russian scientific conferences.
