Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) is the only Russian research establishment engaged in integrated study and development of aeroengines. Its activity spreads from early stages of study of basic physical processes up to participation together with industrial organizations in joint manufacture, upgrading and certification of new engine.

An integral part of CIAM is a research test center (RTC) with unique capability for altitude/speed and special tests of full-scale airbreathing jet engines, systems and components. It belongs to the family of largest test centers of this type in the world, Arnold test center in the USA and Sacle in France including.

The Institute directly participated in development of all domestic aeroengines. Nowadays it provides for an advanced scientific and technological base (ASTB) built on researches in many fields, such as gas dynamics, combustion, strength, chemistry, metallurgy, and electronics.

The main ASTB aim consists in development of a new generation of competitive domestic engines. A new methodology of aeroengines development is being matured in CIAM, which effectively employs techniques and means of mathematic modeling, as well as modern computers. CIAM forecasts a drastic, in two-three times, reduction of development terms for new engines at minimum number of experimental items.
