Abstract: In the context of AES-like ciphers we give an outline of specific approach to linear and differential cryptanalysis. We obtain new results permitting to improve estimates of important linear and differential characteristics of AES-like ciphers. Some examples illustrates drawbacks in conventional proofs of security.
Key words: AES, AES-like algorithm, XSLP-cipher, linear cryptanalysis, differential cryptanalysis, active $S$-box, branch number, linear (differential) trail.
