Abstract: The choice of variables is the most important stage in the statistical study of relationships. We show that this stage can be formalized, if there is a constructive description of the full sets of input and output variables and if we possess a sufficient preliminary knowledge of the problem. A case of ecological studies is considered as an example, where new results can be obtained by the proposed approach.
