Abstract: The paper deals with problems on the nonlinear evolution of instabilities in plasma and gas equilibrium configurations. Some general properties of “frozen in” functions are established: strong deformation of their level surfaces and appearance of thin layers with high gradient values. The result is illustrated in computation of the development of helical and axisymmetric MHD – instabilities in a plasma cylinder.
