Abstract: Quasi-equilibrium and metastable (overheated) liquid phases of carbon are formed in the initial stage of the laser irradiation of a graphite target in air and in a vacuum, respectively, with an approximate position of the solid–liquid–vapour triple point of carbon at 1 bar, 4000 K.
