Abstract: Ytterbium(II) and ytterbium(III) halides react with disodium or dipotassium tetraphenylethenide to form the complex dianion [Yb(Ph2CCPh2)2]2–, which demonstrates bis-η3-coordination of the tetraphenylethylene dianions to the Yb2+ cation in a solid state.
