Abstract: We have conducted a detailed study of the transition of multilayer HTSC conductors intended for use in electrical equipment from the superconducting to resistive state and from the resistive to normal state when the current passing through them exceeds the critical value. The conditions that stimulate an increase in the thermal breakdown current in multilayer HTSC ribbons have been derived based on an analysis of the thermal state of an HTSC ribbon under current overloading, maximal heating temperature, and its transverse gradient during transition of the HTSC ribbon to the normal state have been estimated using experimental data on the resistance of the normal region and the superconductivity recovery time.
