Abstract: The paper examines the comparison of the criterion incubation time criterion of cavitation and the classical criterion of unstable cavitation. It is shown that the incubation time criterion of cavitation can be a universal basis for estimating the threshold values of negative pressure in a wide range of frequencies of a sound field, at different temperatures of a liquid and hydrostatic pressure. Unlike the classical criterion, it does not require information about the microparameters of the defective structure of the liquid. On the other hand, the combination of the two criteria makes it possible to determine the frequency dependence of the range of radii of active cavitation nuclei. Moreover, the paper considers the physical nature of the liquid macroparameters used in the incubation time criterion of cavitation. It is discussed that the incubation time of cavitation may be related to the Gibbs number and the rate of nucleation of cavitation nuclei.
