Abstract: A characterization of Markov states in terms of their modular groups is given. The factoriality of such a state is proved. In particular, the non-commutative Markov shift is a K-system. For any mixing Markov automorphism, a quantum K-system with entropy equal to that of the automorphism is constructed.
