Abstract: A theory of the excitation of surface waves by a fast charged particle moving in a thin homogeneous metal film surrounded by a dielectric medium has been proposed. The Cherenkov effect for the surface waves has been shown to occur at the velocity of particles one or two orders of magnitude lower than the respective velocity in a homogeneous medium.
