Absorption of electromagnetic waves by plasma oscillations in an infinite two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field

Abstract:
New weakly damping magnetoplasmon modes in an unbounded two-dimensional electron system have recently been predicted. It can be expected that, if the frequency of light at a given wave vector is lower than the frequency of magnetoplasma oscillations, these oscillations should be manifested in optical coefficients, e.g., in the absorption coefficient of electromagnetic waves incident on the two-dimensional system. We analyze the reflection, transmission, and absorption coefficients of electromagnetic waves obliquely incident on the two-dimensional electron system whose conductivity has a Drude form taking into account dissipation and a magnetic field normal to the system. It has been found that all these coefficients have no poles near magnetoplasma waves. However, the dependence of the absorption coefficient on the angle of incidence can have a pronounced maximum near predicted magnetoplasmon modes.
