Abstract: The magnetic anisotropy energies, as well as spin and orbital magnetic moments of the atoms involved in the simplest nanostructures formed due to the self-organization within the first Cu(100) surface layer, are calculated in the framework of the density functional theory. The critical role of the surface relaxation, which leads to the rotation of the easy magnetization axis in iron nanoclusters, is demonstrated in the calculations of magnetic anisotropy.
