Abstract: A criterion is presented for the effectiveness of an explosive, based upon a thermodynamic model of the work done by the expanding detonation products. The criterion enables evaluation of the explosive effectiveness at various stages of expansion of the explosion products or conversion of the energy output from the products into mechanical work at various times during their expansion.
