Behavior of thin surface films in the contact zone of metal bodies at high pressures
A. A. Shtertser Design and Technology Division of Lavrentyev Institute of Hydrodynamics of the Siberian Branch of the RAS
Abstract:
The movement of surface oxide, hydroxide, and other layers preventing seizing under conditions of the application of high pressures was analyzed. It is shown that during transition of solid bodies to a fluid state the action of surface tension forces in the contact zone leads to deformation of thin films with decrease of their surface. As a result the seizing spots grow and, accordingly, the strength of joining the bodies increases.
