Dynamics and prevention of mineshaft explosions

Abstract: A new mechanism is proposed for the development of explosions in coal mines, which is based on the possible appearance of electrostatic charges capable of initiating methane combustion in the porous medium of rubble masonry in the ceiling spans of tunnels. This mechanism explains explosions that develop without visible external cause. Ways of fighting this dangerous phenomenon are proposed.
