Research into the effect of loosening in failed rock

Abstract: The loosening phenomenon is examined by solving simplified problems about converging and diverging motions of spherical layers, and also by an experimental study of a plane motion of a substance undergoing shear deformations. An expression for the loosening function is obtained; this expression predicts variation of density under shear deformations at fixed pressure in the range 1.67 $<\rho<$ 2.3 g/cm$^3$.
