Abstract:
Sound velocities in mixtures of iron with sulfur and silicon are calculated from experimental Hugoniot at high pressures. Postshock sound velocities in iron-sulfur and iron-silicon samples are measured using the side rarefaction method. The calculated and measured sound velocities are compared with geophysical data for the outer liquid core of the Earth.
Keywords:
Hugoniot, sound velocity, structure of the Earth’s core.
