Hardware and software of fail-safe computing systems

Hardware designs and software mechanisms making computing systems fail-safe are analyzed, starting with the first fail-soft systems to state-of-art fail-save general purpose and, notably, vitally important computing systems. The specific features and properties of structural systems are discussed which simultaneously make systems fast and fail-safe and which serve either of these purposes. Basic problems in development of credibly functioning and fail-safe computing systems are indicated.
