Optimal control of a quantum statistical ensemble

Procedures for optimizing the states of a quantum statistical ensemble are proposed which apply the maximum principle to problems of control on groups of motion of quantum systems. As an example a three level controlled system is considered which is in thermodynamic equilibrium at the initial time. Under certain conditions for a system with degenerate levels a reversible energy exchange with the external drive field is possible.
